Photoshop Tutorial – Making 3D Icons
In this tutorial we’ll create a 3D Icon:
1. Start by making a new file with the Width=1024 and Height= 768.
2. Make a new layer then using the Custom Shape Tool with the Arrow 12 shape selected draw the shape like in the image bellow:

3. Go to Layer->Rasterize->Shape, then press Ctrl+T to access the free transform tool, using the free transform tool rotate, scale and positon the arrow like in the image bellow, make the arrow a bit wider:

4. Using my tutorial Making Round Corners make round corners to the arrow but instead of using a blur radius of 10 use a blur radius of 15, the result should be like the one bellow:

5. Go to Layer->Layer Mask->Apply.
6. Go to Layer->Layer Style->Blending Options and apply the following styles:
- Bevel and Emboss:

- Contour with the default value.
- Gradient Overlay, the left gradient color is #4f4f4f an the right color is #939292.

7. Ctrl+Click on the arrow layer thumbnail to select the text contour, Go to Select->Modify->Contract and enter a value of 35.
8. Make a new layer and fill the selection with black.
9. Go to Layer->Layer Style->Blending Options and apply the following styles:
- Drop Shadow:

- Inner Shadow:

- Bevel and Emboss:
![]()
- Contour with the default value.
- Gradient Overlay, the left gradient color is #003d7b an the right color is #0289de.

The result should be like the one bellow:

10. Press M to use the Rectangular Marquee Tool, then make a selection like in the image bellow:

11. Make a new layer then using the Gradient Tool with the settings from the image bellow, fill the selection draging from top to the bottom of the selection:

12. Press Ctrl+D to deselect then set the layer blending mode to Screen and the opacity to 90, Go to Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blur and set a radius of 5.
13. Press L to use the Polygonal Lasso Tool, then make a selection like in the image bellow:

14. Make a new layer then using the Gradient Tool with the settings from the image bellow, fill the selection draging from bottom to the top of the selection:

15. Press Ctrl+D to deselect then set the layer blending mode to Screen and the opacity to 70, Go to Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blur and set a radius of 5.
16. Using the Free Transform Tool scale and position this layer until the result is like in the image bellow:

17. Hide the background layer then go to Layer->Merge Visible.
18. Using the Perspective Tool from Edit->Transform->Perspective drag the right side down until it looks like in the image bellow:

19. Now we will gonna do the 3D part. Duplicate the layer then go to Edit->Free Transform then press on your keybord two times arrow Down and two times arrow Left then press Enter to apply the changes.
20. Now hold presed on your keyboard Ctrl+Alt+Shift and press T about 6 times, this depends on how thick you want your icon to be.
21. Hide the background layer then go to Layer->Merge Visible.
22. Go to Layer->Layer Style->Blending Options and apply the following styles:
- Drop Shadow

23. Go to Image->Adjustments->Brightness/Contrast and set the contrast to +20.
The final result should look like the one bellow, I just added a blue gradient background:

Is there a way to get this effect using Paint Shop Pro.
I don’t have the program you used and I’d love to learn to
do this.

In my free time I like to surf net for various new and creative things.Doing so I came across this site.Reading this post,Got to learn a very new and interesting thing about making 3D icons in photoshop.It was great experience learning it.
